PhD Theses

Exploring Protein–Protein Interactions in Asymmetric Membranes

The groups of Prof. Georg Pabst (Membrane Biophysics) and Prof. Georg Krainer (Molecular Biophysics) at the University of Graz jointly invite applications for a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the FWF-funded project “ASYMPPI: Exploring Protein–Protein Interactions in Asymmetric Membranes”. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in membrane biophysics, single-molecule methods, and protein–lipid interactions within a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment.

About the Position:

The successful candidate will study the self-association of de novo designed transmembrane peptide (TMP) sensors that report on lateral membrane stress profiles. Key tasks include:

  • Design of a library of TMP stress sensors
  • Development of single-molecule FRET assays to quantify TMP self-association equilibria and kinetics

  • Engineering and characterization of asymmetric lipid vesicles by SAXS/SANS and complementary techniques

You will work at the interface of molecular biophysics, soft matter physics, and biomolecular engineering with opportunities to collaborate with experts in computational sciences and theory.

Who Should Apply:

  • Master’s degree (or be near completion of) in Bio(Physics), Chemistry, Bioengineering, or a closely related field

Desirable expertise in:

  • Single-molecule methods

  • Data analysis, and programming (Python)

  • Experimental membrane biophysics
